Vision

We seek to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality due to poisoning and drug overdose in BC through research, education, and knowledge translation.

Current Activities

  • Completion of Emergency Department Opioid Overdose Treatment Study
  • Increased awareness of Best Practices for treatment of opioid overdose in Emergency Department
  • Obtaining federal funding to further develop surveillance system

Short-Term Goals

  • Evaluate the incidence of poisoning and drug overdose in BC
  • Determine the economic burden of poisoning and drug overdose in BC
  • Define best practices for care of poisoning and drug overdose patients
  • Develop a curriculum in toxicology for emergency medicine trainees

Long-Term Goals

  • Implement a surveillance program that will allow us to continuously evaluate morbidity and mortality due to poisoning and drug overdose in BC
  • Implement a system so that the effectiveness of public health, harm reduction, injury prevention, education and knowledge translation programs to address the problem of poisoning and drug overdose can be continuously evaluated
  • Create better practices for care of poisoning and drug overdose patients
  • Coordinate a comprehensive continuous professional development program in toxicology for emergency physicians
